Baby's First Letterpress Project

I have recently been learning how to letterpress for my volunteer job at the Independent Publishing Resource Center.  Here's some postcards I made to send out with new membership packets.  Join and you may get one too!

Peep No. 20 is Finally Finished!

I got called off my shift tonight and instead of pouting about it I figured I'd do something productive. So, I finished issue 20 of my vaguely ongoing serial zine, Peep. Peep has been in existence since January of 2008 and I am very proud to keep it going.

Issue 20 features a recipe for biscuits, helpful life tips, a mad lib written by yours truly and much more. For this edition I tried a new technique and hand-bound each zine using a simple "three-hole punch" bookbinding stitch. This will make the spines stronger and more capable of withstanding many readings and perusals. Additionally, each zine is hand-numbered and stamped with today's date. It was produced in a limited edition of 65 copies.

Interested? Order it on my Etsy page!

While You Were Out postcards

Another random fun venture: hand-drawn postcards mimicking those "While You Were Out" office memos. Available on my etsy page!

Algeria: Notes on an Unfamiliar Place

I just finished a zine featuring my father's travelogues about Algeria. He and my mother moved there about a year ago to join the foreign service and work at the US embassy in Algiers. The text in the zine is written by him and edited by yours truly. I also did the illustrations and compiled the whole thing. It was a big hit at last weekend's Portland Zine Symposium. This zine (and others) are now available on my Etsy page.

New Zine: Paint Our Town

For the past few months I have been working on a zine about the process of creating a public art mural in Portland. It is very complicated and this zine was commissioned to explain the process in an easily understandable (and attractive) fashion. I finally finished it last week! Here are some pictures. We are distributing these for free, so let me know if you would like one.

Bench Observation Project

Recently I was struck by the random existence of a concrete bench at the intersection of NE 3rd Avenue and NE Weidler Street. The bench, situated across the street from a 7-11 convenience store, has no obvious purpose (not being associated with a bus stop and not bearing any sort of advertising). I have decided to spend some sort of time on this bench every day and record my observations.

Stay tuned for updates.

Handmade Books

I have been experimenting with making books. The first of my experiments has been serving as my personal notebook and has held up quite well. This is my second attempt, which turned out even better than the first.

It's for sale on my Etsy page.

Community Profile on Golden Rule's blog

I forgot to mention this earlier, but Andrea Frampton did a wonderful interview with me about my workspace and art practice as a part of Golden Rule's Community Profile series. Beautiful photographs and beautifully written. See the full interview here.

Experimental Papermaking

Recently I have decided to try my hand at making paper. I had a bunch of junk mail piling up and thought it would be interesting to make it into something new. I'm excited to see how this turns out over time. I think that by periodically soaking and blending together the junk mail it will serve as a way of averaging everything together and creating a sort of color index of whatever I happen to receive.

Things are getting off to a messy start. The paper is currently suspended over my bathtub, in its second day of drying. As you can see in the photo it is pretty gray (mainly due to my Oregon voter's information booklet).

Monotype Cards on Etsy

The monoprint cards I just posted are now listed in my etsy shop. Check them out!

Installation Documentation

I just ran across an image of one of my old installations from Summer 2008 in a First Thursday write-up on Shift Magazine's website. See it here.
